In April 2008 the world media went into a frenzy when the teenage star of Disney's popular Hannah Montana series Miley Cyrus was photographed partly nude for the Vanity Fair magazine.

The reality of the story was that the young teenager simply bared her back for the cameras. Miley Cyrus and her country singer father Billy Ray Cyrus were photographed the famous photographer Annie Leibovitz for the Vanity Fair magazine. The 15 year old teenage girl was accompanied by her father throughout the whole photo shoot. In behind the scenes photos from Vanity Fair, the magazine shows that it was quite the family affair, unlike the sordid affair that the media made it out to be. Pictures show Miley Cyrus and her father together, along with the youngest daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus, 8 year old Noah Cyrus and her mom Tish on set in Calabasas, California, USA. With the success of Hannah Montana the young singer and actress has become a meal ticket for the paparazzi, with her every move being scrutinized by the gossip media. The Vanity Fair magazine described the controversial photo of the Hannah Montana star as a "topless but demure portrait". When asked about why she took the photo, Miley Cyrus said "I think it’s really artsy. It wasn’t in a skanky way. And you can’t say no to Annie (Leibovitz). She’s so cute. She gets this puppy-dog look and you’re like, O.K." Miley Cyrus later said "I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed. I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about." After the controversy that the media created because of the partly nude photos of Miley Cyrus, the photographer Annie Leibovitz said "I'm sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted.
