Robert Nest Marley was born on the 6th of February, 1945 in Saint
Ann Parish, Jamaica. His
father was a white Jamaican Marine officer called Norval Sinclair
Marley. His mother was a black Jamaican called Cedella Booker.
The couple were married but were rarely together as Norval was
often away. Bob's father died at the age of 60 when he was just
10 years old.
Marley and his mother grew up in the tough neighborhood of Trenchtown
in Kingston, Jamaica. Bob Marley gained a reputation of being
able to handle himself physically and was nicknamed "Tuff
Gong". His mixed race (black mother and white father) meant
that he would be taunted in the slums, which forced Marley to
learn how to defend himself.
Bob Marley's first job out of school was as a welder, but he had
his heart set on making music. Marley made friends with fellow
musicians Bunny Wailer, Joe Higgs and Peter Tosh. Bob Marley released
his first two songs using the name Bobby Martell. The songs were
called "Judge Not" and "One Cup of Coffee"
and neither of them were commercially successful.
