John Howard was born on the 26th of July, 1939. Howard is Australia's
second longest serving Prime Minister and leader
of the Liberal Party in Australia.
Howard's birthplace was Earlwood, a suburb of Sydney Australia.
He attended Earlwood Primary School and then Canterbury Boys
High School. Howard graduated from the University of Sydney with
a bachelor of Law in 1961.
Prime Minister John Howard became Australian PM in 1996 and has
subsequently won the next 3 elections, being in 1998, 2001 and
2004. He is considered a conservative politician
and has described himself as "the most conservative leader
the Liberals have ever had".
When asked about the introduction of a Goods and Services Tax
or GST in Australia, he was quoted as saying "There's
no way that GST will ever be part of our policy... Never ever.
It's dead." His actions contradicted his words though,
as Howard went on to introduce GST in Australia.
Prime Minister Howard was a strong supporter of the Iraq invasion
in 2003 and has been criticized for blindly following the lead
of the United
States president George W Bush. Australian troops entered
Iraq with the United States and British lead force. This became
an unpopular decision
for Howard, particularly after no weapons of mass destruction
were found in Iraq (the main reason for entering Iraq and ousting
the leader Suddam Husein).
The Australian prime minister was strongly criticized for dragging
his feet on environmental issues. Howard refused to sign the "Kyoto
Protocol", which was an international attempt to cut greenhouse
gas emissions throughout the world. The United States of America
(under the leadership of George W Bush) and Australia were the
only two countries that announced that they had no intention of
ratifying the Kyoto Protocol.
Prime Minister John Howard lost the Australian election for PM
to the Labour Party leader Kevin Rudd in December of 2007. He
also lost his seat of the Division of Bennelong to the television
presenter Maxine McKew.
John Howard and his wife Janette have three children
together; Melanie, Tim and Richard Howard. John Howard became
a grandfather for the first time on the 25th of August, 2007 when
his daughter Melanie gave birth to Angus Benjamin Howard McDonald.
