Queen Latifah was born on the 18th of March, 1970 in New Jersey,
USA, as Dana Elaine Owens. Her father Lancelot was police officer
and her mother Rita was a highschool art teacher, but they separated
before Dana was ten years old.
Like many African American singers before her, Queen Latifah started
her singing career in her church choir. Before releasing her first
album (All Hail the Queen) in 1988 at the age of just 18, she
briefly worked with "Ladies Fresh" doing beatboxing.
The debut album received favorable reviews, and meant Dana Owens
could well and truly leave behind her days as a Burger King employee.
Queen Latifah went on to develop her career as one of the first
major female rappers. The male dominated rap industry embraced
Owens, making her a pioneering black woman that was creating her
own musical path.
Latifah continues to release best selling rap albums, but also
has a successful career as a movie actress. She was nominated
for "Best Supporting Actress" at the Academy Awards
after her performance in the 2002 film "Chicago". Other
films she has appeared include "Bringing Down the House",
"Beauty Shop", "Taxi", "Stranger Than
Fiction", and more.
The multitalented celebrity also released her own autobiography
"Ladies First: Revelations of a Strong Woman" in 1999
where she shared many of the personal tragedies and challenges
that she has had to deal with.
Her 2004 album release "The Dana Owens Album" is a selection
of her favorite songs that are mostly jazz and soul inspired.
In 2006 Queen Latifah received her own start on the "Hollywood
Walk of Fame", which made her the first hip hop artists to
ever be honored with one.
