I was trying to get people to see that you can't just grow for
ever and hope that the environment will take care of itself.

I felt Australians
needed to come to terms with the fact that they inhabit a continent
in the southern oceans whose nearest neighbours are Asia and
it has a very distinctive history and a very unique biological
history, and that we need to come to terms with that to live
sustainably.

I remain
optimistic that we can turn things around, but I think we've
got much less time than I thought to ensure our survival.

We could
go over the cliff. You would hope not. You would hope that people
see what needs to be done. It's not rocket science. It's not
difficult. It's not even all that costly. It's actually about
the way you think about the world.

I was born
in Australia as a European and we are still coming to terms
with our environment in Australia. It's taken people a long
time to realise they're no longer living in Europe and they
can no longer live according to the European way of living because
to do that is to destroy the environment of Australia. There's
a mismatch between the people and their culture, and the land
that they live in.

The future
is unfolding before our eyes. Canadas Inuits see it in
disappearing Arctic ice and permafrost. Australians see it in
fatal heatwaves and extended droughts. Scientists see it in
tree rings, ancient coral and bubbles trapped in icicles. All
of these things reveal that the world has not been as warm as
it is now for a millennium or more, and that the last years
have been the hottest on record.

There is
job growth in renewables, there is job growth in energy efficiency
and there is job growth in developing innovative industries
and technologies to successfully meet the challenge of climate
change.

Climate
change is so big that people who study it.. and many do.. need
to speak to it. They must present scientific papers, they must
appear in public, they must speak to the media and we must hear
their voices. In order to get policy right, policymakers.. governments..
need to make decisions based on sound science.

But no matter
how big the effort to push a propaganda line might be, climate
change is bigger. This, undoubtedly and regrettably, is the
biggest immediate long-term environmental challenge we face.
A failure to concretely come to some policy outcome on climate
change has not only a negative environmental impact but also
social and economic consequences for us.

The challenge
for governments is to adopt policies that address the increasing
energy demand but within the long-term context of climate change.
Many elements can be considered: ways of making coal cleaner;
rapidly developing and supporting a suite of renewable energy
technologies with an emphasis on increased energy efficiency;
carbon caps and trading; and, of course, looking hard at ways
of reducing and localising energy demand.

If we want
to move towards a low-polluting, sustainable society, we need
to get consumers to think about their purchases.

Many organic
practices simply make sense, regardless of what overall agricultural
system is used. Far from being a quaint throwback to an earlier
time, organic agriculture is proving to be a serious contender
in modern farming and a more environmentally sustainable system
over the long term.

The terrible
part of this looming catastrophe is that people have been working
on solutions for years and have developed concrete steps to
massively reduce our energy use, while stimulating whole new
industries and technologies that are more efficient and affordable.

We are upsetting
the atmosphere upon which all life depends. In the late '80s
when I began to take climate change seriously, we referred to
global warming as a "slowmotion catastrophe" one we
expected to kick in perhaps generations later. Instead, the
signs of change have accelerated alarmingly.

The fact
of the matter is that today, stuff-selling mega-corporations
have a huge influence on our daily lives. And because of the
competitive nature of our global economy, these corporations
are generally only concerned with one thing - the bottom line.
That is, maximizing profit, regardless of the social or environmental
costs.
