Presumably to say that happiness is the supreme good seems a platitude,
and some more distinctive account of it is still required. This
might perhaps be achieved by grasping what is the function of
man.. Is it likely that whereas joiners and shoemakers have certain
functions or activities, man as such has none, but has been left
by nature a functionless being?

You start
out happy that you have no hips or boobs. All of a sudden you
get them, and it feels sloppy. Then just when you start liking
them, they start drooping.

The pursuit of money is in some ways a very shallow thing and
it won't bring happiness unless your mind is prepared to use
that money in ways that expand it and satisfy it. So, to me
an interest in science and literature and the arts, is all part
of just being a full human being, and of course you've got to
make some money as well, but our education system it seems to
me, should be producing fully rounded human beings who can say,
'I've lead a really satisfying life. I've had all the tools
I need to be able to lead a great life,' rather than just, 'I
made some money.'

What is
called happiness in its narrowest sense comes from the satisfaction
- most often instantaneous - of pent up needs which have reached
great intensity, and by its very nature can only be a transitory
experience.

want happiness and do not want pain and suffering.

So often,
we blame other people when, really, the problem is right down
in here. I'm not happy. I don't know what's wrong. If I just
had another job, I could be happy. If I just get married, I
would be happy. Well if I just wasn't married, I would be happy.
Well, if I just had some kids, I'll be happy. I'll be happy
when these kids finally grow up and get out of here. If I had
a bigger house, I would be happy. Well, I got a big house. Now
if I just had a maid to clean, I'd be happy. Well, now if I
just had a maid, I could get along with better, I'd be happy.

If you want
to have sustained joy, you have to not only make sure that you
think right, but you also have to make decisions now that are
going to guarantee some joy in the future. One of the key things
for people as far as joy is concerned is not living a selfish,
self-centered lifestyle where we live our lives expecting everybody
else to do something for us.

I think
there is a serious corruption in the idea sold through advertising
that you can attain spiritual peace through lifestyle and the
notion of building your happiness from the outside-in by acquiring
things.. which if you think about it, is the essence of advertising.

I'm not religious at all. I think faith is something that gives
you strength. I believe in fate and I believe that things happen
for a reason but I don't think that there's a high power, necessarily.
I believe in karma very much though. There are so many rude
people around and they're the people that don't have any real
friends. And relationships with people - with your mom, your
nan, your dog.. are what you get the most happiness in life
from. Apart from shoes and bags.
